Grid Marks

Terms of use

Last updated: 29 July 2026 · England & Wales

In short: Grid Marks is free to use for legitimate survey and mapping work. Don’t scrape, clone, or resell the service as your own product. Don’t abuse the maps or third-party services. Your marks stay on your device unless you export or share them yourself.

1. Who we are

“Grid Marks”, “we”, and “us” refer to the operator of gridmarks.co.uk. Contact: contact@gridmarks.co.uk (general) or hello@gridmarks.co.uk (product feedback).

2. The service

Grid Marks is a browser-based map tool for planning and marking sites, primarily in the UK. It is provided free of charge for everyday use, without requiring an account. Features may change, and optional paid plans may be introduced later; if so, those terms will be stated clearly.

3. Acceptable use

You may use Grid Marks for lawful personal or business surveying, planning, and related fieldwork.

You must not:

  • Copy, mirror, scrape, or systematically download the site, app shell, or branding to run a competing product or to republish Grid Marks as your own
  • Remove or obscure copyright, branding, or attribution notices
  • Abuse third-party services the app uses (map tiles, geocoding, routing, land-register sites) in ways that breach those providers’ terms or fair-use policies
  • Attempt to disrupt the service, other users, or our infrastructure (including bulk automated requests beyond normal interactive use)
  • Use the service for unlawful activity or to harass others

Automated access that respects robots.txt for indexing is fine. Harvesting the application for redistribution is not.

4. Your data

Marks, projects, offline map downloads, and archives are stored on your device (browser storage) unless you export a file or share a link yourself. We do not operate a user account database for the free app today. Clearing browser data, or some mobile browser policies, can delete local data — export project files for backups.

5. Intellectual property

The Grid Marks name, logo, site design, and original software are protected by copyright and related rights. Map data, aerial imagery, and land-register content belong to their respective providers (for example Ordnance Survey, OpenStreetMap contributors, Esri, Registers of Scotland, HM Land Registry) and remain subject to their licences and terms.

6. Third-party services

The app may open or call third-party websites and APIs (maps, Street View, land registers, postcode lookup, routing). Those services have their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for their content or availability.

7. No warranty

Grid Marks is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind. Coordinates, routes, offline maps, and land-register links are aids only — they are not a substitute for professional survey judgement, official title plans, or regulated searches where those are required.

8. Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from use of (or inability to use) the service, including lost work, inaccurate positions, or decisions made using the map. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law (including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud).

9. Changes

We may update these terms and the service from time to time. The “Last updated” date above will change when we do. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated terms.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Courts in England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except where consumer law gives you other rights.
